The Adventure Monkeys are experienced and permitted Plumas National Forest guides and coaches that specialize in youth development through outdoor physical education. Our coaches offer safe, personalized instruction in a fun environment that is inclusive for all.  Our programs concentrate on respect for ourselves, the land we use, and all other forest user groups we may encounter while learning how to safely operate and enjoy the tools and toys we use to see the world.  Please check out our website for more information about the Adventure Monkeys and Adventure Camp.

What is Adventure Camp?

Adventure Camp by the Adventure Monkeys is an after school program based out of Quincy Ca.  Our camps will be rain or shine from 3-530pm, 1 day a week for 6 week with a maximum of 6 students per session.  1 head coach will oversee activities with an assistant.   The outdoors and mountain biking will be the highlight of the camp but if weather is unbearable we could be inside.   All programs will have an intent of building leadership skills while in the forest.    An emphasis on 1st responder training such as compass and navigation training, dealing with medical emergencies, and bike and gear mechanical will be included into daily itineraries.  Service work and giving back to the community will also be a theme to Adventure Camp and 1 session will be spent building trails with our partners at the Sierra Butte Trail Stewardship.

Where is Adventure Camp?

The Adventure Monkeys will pickup riders after school and transport them to the South Park Trailhead or one of our other favorite riding areas around the Plumas National Forest.    If weather forces us indoors we could be at the bowling alley or maybe even painting a picture at Serpilio Hall while we dance to some music.   If it's snowing we could be snowshoeing around South Park.

*Actual pickup times and locations are dependent on student needs and will be adjusted accordingly.  Parent pick-up will be communicated 1 day in advance to a location close to town.

What does my child need?

Outdoor clothing appropriate for inclement weather. Rain jacket, snow pants, gloves, warm shoes etc.  A little bit of rain will not stop us from being outside.  Students must be prepared for being outdoors in January for 2 hours.  If it is just nasty, we will go inside but an emphasis will be on the outdoors and being prepared for weather is a part of life in the mountains and a necessity for being safe while having fun.  If a student does not have appropriate clothing they will be told to stay back.

A working mountain bike is a must and all the gear associated with it (please see below for more information).    For our beginner/Balance sessions, please do not be afraid that your child's bike will not be appropriate.   Contact us and we will make sure it is ok, but this level of rider does not need anything fancy.

How much is Adventure Camp?

The cost is $350 and non refundable for missed sessions. (exceptions will be made for family emergencies or unforeseen illness and injury.   Missed sessions in this situation will be credited toward a future Adventure Camp.   If cost is an issue we have scholarships available.   If the scholarship still doesn't cover the cost, give us a call.   We want your child to be riding.  Don't let cost be the deterrent.   If you sign up siblings, a $25 discount will be applied to each registration.

What if my child doesn't like it?
That's ok.  Give us a try for a single day.  We are confident they will love it.   Give us a call if this sounds like its an appropriate option for you.

Where do we pick up our child after the session is over?
We know you are busy so we want to make it as convenient as we possible.   We can drive your child home if you live in Quincy.  Most parents will pick there child up at Barlow parking lot if they live outside of the area.

How to make a reservation?

1)Decide your skill level-

Beginner "Balance" = Comfortable riding a bike on flat dirt road/trails.  Basic understanding of braking and shifting. The rider is competent enough to understand their own limitations.  Can ride 2 miles in 2 hours.  Comfortable being outdoors all day.    Our Balance group will focus on the fundamentals of being on a bike.    Learning to enjoy our environment and understanding the basic principals of riding is the concentration of our Balance session.

Intermediate "Pace" = Rider is competent enough to understand their limitations.  Understands that not riding obstacles is just as important as riding them.   Has ridden 7-10 miles with 1500ft of elevation change on dirt in 3 hours.   Comfortable riding over obstacles up to 8 inches high.  Comfortable being outdoors all day.

Advanced "Flow" = Rider is competent enough to understand their limitations.  Understands that not riding obstacles is just as important as riding them.   Has ridden 15-20 miles with 2500ft of elevation change on dirt in 5 hours.   Comfortable riding over obstacles up to 16 inches high.  Comfortable being outdoors all day.

If you have questions regarding your child's skill level give us a call and we will help you figure it out.

2)Find the dates that works for you-

3)We are limited to only 8 students per class.

4)Our dates and itineraries are flexible. If you have a group of 4-8 children of similar age and skill, we can coordinate with your family's excursion.

If you have any questions or would like an itinerary with more specifics, please feel free to call anytime.

Coach Matt Meyerl came to Plumas county to work on helicopter 512 for the Forest Service in 2014. In 2019, after a decade of working as a federal firefighter for the USFS, he left his career to pursue his passion of mountain bikes and teaching. His experience as a seasoned downhill mountain biker along with his years of being an exceptionally fit professional first responder have elevated the Adventure Monkeys services to offer safe, world class instruction in one of the worlds premiere mountain bike destinations.
